DOUG Wheller says he is proof that a drug the Federal Government of Australia will not subsidise under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme saves lives.
Two years ago Mr Wheller, a 59-year-old bookkeeper of Kenmore Hills, suffered a heart attack brought on by breathing difficulties.
He was in intensive care on a respirator for three weeks until physicians diagnosed he had the rare muscular degenerative condition Pompe disease.
He was put on a course of medication available through a charitable access program and immediately began to recover.
In three months, he was back at work. Two years later, he goes to the gym twice a week, walks 8-10km a week and his cardiologist no longer wants to see him.
"I'm living, breathing proof that this stuff works," Mr Wheller said.
